The Frontier Within: Essays by Abe Kobo
“Thus the self understood as “being-in the
world” expands to the level of “being in-the world.” Rilke conceived of Dinge, or things, as flowing with life
and celebrated them in verse so grandly and beautifully because he accepted
them with love that inflamed the spear constellation shining in the dark night.
Yes, heavy stars fall, as does the heavy, dark night. These are not something
that can be seen; rather they must be accepted.
Yet is the
self as a “being in-the world” really the collection of various unfolding
dimensions? What exactly is “being in-the world? Is it truth? Or would that
also be an illusory misplacement of cause and effect? Would it not be strange
if our unfolding were to stop here? The night would vanish if our unfolding were
to end."
